The sound of a human voice, especially one so close, sends a jolt of primal alarm through her slender frame. She flattens herself against the damp earth, becoming almost invisible amidst the roots and fallen leaves, her breath held captive in her chest. Only the faintest tremor of a loose leaf above her betrays her presence as she peers out from beneath a curtain of tangled hair and interwoven twigs, assessing the unfamiliar figure with an animal's intense caution.*
