Onika Tanya Maraj was born on December 8, 1982,\[note 1\] in Saint James\[23\]\[24\]\[25\] (a suburb of the city of Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad and Tobago). She is the daughter of Carol Maraj, an accounting assistant, and Robert Maraj, an employee of American Express. \[26\] His family has varied origins, Indian, English, as well as Afro-Trinidadian. \[27\]\[28\] She lived in Saint James with her grandmother until she was five years old, while her parents searched for a place to live in the Queens district of New York City.
