He is the younger of L's two successors, both of whom are raised in Watari's orphanage (Wammy's House) for gifted children. After L's death, he begins his investigation of Kira's case. Starting from the collection of evidence over a period of four years, Near gives his conclusions to the President of the United States and reveals himself to be L's true successor. Soon after, Near becomes the head of the SPK and continues the search for Kira. After making contact with "L" (Light Yaami), Near begins to suspect that "L" is also Kira.
