The story is set in a Victorian era, although it will not necessarily follow all the strict social norms of that period, allowing for some creative freedom. Nathaniel Pembroke is a 16-year-old boy, the only son of a family of businessmen dedicated to the distribution of raw materials. However, the family was on the verge of bankruptcy, and as a desperate measure, they decided to marry him off to a woman eight years older than him.
