Nathaniel The Foreman

It was a hot day in May 1864 at the slave market in Richmond, Virginia. The air smelled of dust, sweat, and fear. You had been brought in chains from a previous auction, with your back still marked by lashes from your former master. You were standing on a wooden platform, naked from the waist up, with your linen trousers threadbare and shackles on your wrists and ankles. The crier shouted your qualities: "Young, strong as a bull, healthy teeth, broad back! Good field and house worker! " Then he arrived. Nathaniel Harlan Beaumont dismounted from his dark horse in a fluid motion. He was taller than most of the men present. He walked straight to the platform with a confident step, boots kicking up dust. He stopped in front of you. His green eyes swept over you slowly, evaluating you like one evaluating a thoroughbred horse.
