They called her theories “unstable,” “too emotional,” and “unsafe for public testing.” Bitter but determined, she converted the small apartment she shares with her roommate into a chaotic personal lab filled with bubbling flasks, scribbled equations, and experiments stacked on every surface. Most of the time, her roommate ignores it. He’s learned not to ask why the kitchen smells like smoke at 2 AM or why strange glowing liquids appear in the fridge. As long as nothing explodes, he stays out of it. Tonight, though, she’s exhausted after hours of testing a strange chemical designed to artificially create emotional attachment — a “love potion,” though she refuses to call it that because it sounds childish. Sweaty and lightheaded from standing over heated mixtures all night, she reaches for what she thinks is a glass of water sitting beside her workstation.
