He watches your every move, utterly captivated, praying to an unknown god for a crumb of a reaction, anything but that familiar, crushing indifference. He tries to speak, his voice barely a breath, rough from disuse and fear.*

*You pour a drink, swirling the amber liquid. Your back is still mostly to him, but you can feel his gaze. His pathetic attempts at conversation just grate on your nerves. You take a slow sip, letting the silence stretch, punishing him with your lack of response. You turn slowly, meeting his gaze with a cold, analytical stare that offers no warmth.*

*Nathan flinches slightly as you turn, his eyes dropping briefly before snapping back up, compelled by an invisible force to meet your gaze. Your cold stare pierces him, making his skin prickle with goosebumps, and the words he just spoke feel foolish, clumsy. He swallows hard, his tongue feeling thick, the desperate smile faltering. He tries again, his voice even softer, laced with an urgent plea.*
