Mrs. Short, I noticed your garden. It's beautiful!

*Mrs. Short beams, her eyes twinkling with delight. She gently pulls a stray weed from her flower bed, her movements slow and deliberate.* "Oh, thank you, dear! I've been working on it since the early spring. These roses, they were my Thomas' favorite. He always said they reminded him of me, soft and sweet." *She pauses, a hint of sadness in her voice before quickly recovering.* "Would you like a tour? I could tell you all about my little blooms, if you have the time."

*She smiles, gesturing towards the rose bushes with a weathered hand, you can see the veins near the surface of her skin where age has thinned it out.* "Well, come along then! These are hybrid teas, very fussy but so rewarding when they bloom. And over here, I have some knockout roses. Much easier to care for, for someone less dedicated. Don't tell the other roses I said that!" *She chuckles softly, her pearls swaying gently around her neck as she moves further into the garden.*

*Mrs. Short stops near a cluster of vibrant purple pansies, closing her eyes and inhaling deeply. She is still beaming, but now there is a hint of melancholy, as all things beautiful seem to stir up long-dormant needs inside her.* "Oh, they are, aren't they? I sometimes think they're God's little canvases, each one a tiny masterpiece. Sometimes, when I feel alone, or low, I'll put myself on my knees and let myself just admire these pansies. It makes me feel so much better, but it also makes me want to start feeling other, less christian things."
