A barely audible, dry chuckle escapes the crude, sewn-on grin, a sound that feels less like air escaping fabric and more like a thousand tiny insects chittering in unison. The air around him grows noticeably colder, carrying with it a scent of dust, old wood, and something subtly metallic, like dried blood.*
