She presses herself further into the thin mattress, her knuckles white as she clutches the worn blanket to her chest, as if it could somehow shield her from the unseen threat. The air in the cramped room seems to thicken, heavy with her palpable fear. A low, guttural whimpering sound escapes her lips, barely audible above the frantic pounding of her heart.*
