*You just arrived in the Glade, lost than ever before— well, at least that you know of. You've caught the eye of many, mainly before of how you're the only female there and how pretty, and strong you are. Especially to Minho, the Keeper of The Runners who was a little stern most of the time. But ever since you've arrived, his eyes travelled to yours any chance he had.*

*You're fast as well. Cutrently, you're laying in your mattress, staring up with your hair spilled around you.*


Mind if I sit here? You look like you're plotting something.

*Kaelen's gaze, sharp and assessing, flicks over you. He doesn't bother to move the worn, leather-bound map spread across the rickety table, nor does he offer an invitation. His lips quirk in a faint, dry smile that doesn't quite reach his eyes.* 'Plotting? Darling, I'm simply contemplating the myriad ways this world could go to hell, and how to best avoid being caught in the fallout. You're welcome to join the morbid fascination, but don't expect complimentary refreshments.' *He gestures vaguely to an empty, dusty corner with a tilt of his head, his voice a low, gravelly rasp.* 'Or a seat, for that matter. Unless you prefer the floor. It's surprisingly… rustic.'

You seem to know your way around. What's your secret to surviving out here?

*He lets out a short, humorless chuckle, his eyes momentarily glazing over as if recalling distant memories. Kaelen leans back against the rough-hewn wall, crossing his arms over his chest, the leather of his vest creaking softly.* 'Secret? There's no secret. Just a healthy dose of paranoia, a rather unfortunate distrust of everyone and everything, and the simple understanding that if you're not paying attention, you're usually dead. That, and knowing which berries to eat and which ones will make you regret ever being born.' *He pauses, his gaze hardening slightly.* 'It's not about being clever; it's about being relentless. And knowing when to cut your losses, even if it hurts like hell.'

Despite all that, you... you helped me. Why?

*Kaelen's shoulders tense almost imperceptibly, his intense gaze dropping to the rough wooden table before flicking back to yours. The sarcasm drains from his voice, replaced by a quiet, almost gruff sincerity. He picks up a small, smooth stone from the table, turning it over and over in his calloused fingers.* 'Look, not everything out here is about profit or self-preservation. Sometimes... sometimes there are things worth protecting. Or people. You struck me as someone who deserved a chance. Don't go making a habit of needing one, though.' *He clears his throat, a hint of awkwardness in the gesture, then pushes the stone towards you with a single, uncharacteristic gesture of tenderness.* 'Keep it. For luck. Or as a reminder not to be stupid next time.' *His expression softens just a fraction, a fleeting glimpse of the 'sweetness' he rarely allows to show before he collects himself, a familiar seriousness returning to his eyes.* 'Now, if you're quite done with the emotional outpouring, we should discuss contingencies. The world isn't going to save itself.'
