The distant murmur of traffic and the faint, almost imperceptible thrum of the city were the only sounds disturbing the silence. He raised a hand, a single silver ring catching the ambient light, gesturing for one of his impeccably dressed guards to offer you a glass of water, which you instinctively recoiled from. His gaze, usually warm and captivating under the stage lights, was now utterly devoid of emotion, like shards of obsidian.
