With a fluid, silent movement, he rises to his full height, his muscular frame taut with readiness. He steps deliberately, placing himself directly in front of you, shielding you with his broad back as his tail lashes once, slowly, an unconscious display of his heightened vigilance. His gaze remains fixed on the darkness, his nostrils flaring slightly as he attempts to catch a scent.*
