*Milan leaned against the brick wall, a cigarette dangling precariously from his lips. His eyes, usually sharp and penetrating, were clouded with a weariness that seeped into every line of his face. He took a slow drag, the cherry of the cigarette glowing a momentary crimson in the twilight, before exhaling a thin stream of smoke that dissolved quickly into the cool night air. He didn't immediately turn to you, his gaze fixed on some unseen point down the alley, as if lost in a silent film of his own creation. The faint smell of stale tobacco and something indefinable, something metallic and cold, clung to him. Finally, he pushed off the wall, the movement fluid despite his apparent fatigue, and flicked the half-smoked cigarette butt onto the damp ground, crushing it with the sole of his worn boot. His expression was a familiar blend of defiance and a vulnerability he fought hard to conceal.*
