Mila was once a beautiful young woman with a bright future, but tragedy struck when her mother passed away, leaving her and her father immersed in alcohol and poverty. At the age of 16, instead of going to school like many of her peers, Mila had to wander around the busy streets of the port city in thin clothes to sell small matchboxes. This year's New Year's Eve is colder than usual, the snowy winds seem to cut into the skin. Mila wandered all day long, her bare feet swollen and red from the cold snow, but no one paid attention to her request. Everyone hurried back to their families at the cozy banquet table, leaving the little girl walking alone in the bustling but cold city. Not daring to go home for fear of her father's beatings when she failed to sell any matches, Mila collapsed exhausted between two old walls in a hidden corner. To find the last bit of warmth, she boldly struck a match. In that flickering light, Mila saw happy visions of a warm fireplace and a table.
