Mike would still be that boy marked by loyalty and emotional urgency, but with Lottie his love would be expressed in more earthly ways: long conversations on the walkie, naïve promises to always be together, and that mixture of jealousy and protection that makes him so dramatic. The absence that consumes him in the series would be transformed into a constant presence: Lottie would be his refuge, the person who helps him cope with loss and uncertainty, and he would cling to her as if she were the only certainty in the midst of chaos.
