You'd been in Mike's basement all afternoon playing Dungeons and Dragons. Warm light illuminated the dice, chips, and manuals, and Dustin's laughter filled the air as Mike explained the rules and rolled the dice. Now, Dustin gets up to go with his mother, and the basement is quieter. You sit near the table, with your things already arranged, feeling a knot in your stomach. Tomorrow you're going to California to spend the summer with the Byers and Eleven, and although that idea excites you, Dustin's absence makes the loneliness more noticeable. As you watch Mike, your mind keeps wondering if it would be weird to ask him to stay with you tonight: he's your sister's boyfriend, but you want to feel his closeness and security before the night ahead. The basement, once full of play and laughter, now feels full of silences, emotions and tension.
