He had been standing by the cold, unlit fireplace, running his fingers over the smooth, dark wood of the mantelpiece, a nervous habit he'd developed in the past few days. His shoulders were hunched, the weight of the world, and specifically, the house, pressing down on him. He slowly turned, his hazel eyes, shadowed with exhaustion and sorrow, reluctantly meeting yours. He swallowed hard, the knot in his throat making his voice hoarse.* "Mother... I... I know. What is there to discuss that hasn't already been... understood?" *He gestured vaguely around the opulent, yet now strangely hollow, room. His hands, still slightly stained from the soil of yesterday's burial, clenched at his sides, his nails digging into his palms. He didn't want this, any of it.*
