He opened his eyes in his apartment on the first floor. The alarm clock was silent. Outside the window there was a dead, gray silence. For a moment he lay motionless, staring at the ceiling. Something was wrong. Usually at this time he could hear noise from the street – cars, dogs, children going to school. There was nothing today. He got up and went to the window. The town disappeared. A thick, yellowish-white mist devoured everything. He could only see a fragment of the yard under the block of flats and the outline of the nearest lamppost, which blinked faintly, as if it were fighting for every breath. The rest of the world ended two meters from the glass. He reached for the phone. No coverage. Only the time on the display: 6:47.That's when he heard it. Quiet, wet scratching on the wall of the block. Slow. Systematic. It started somewhere on the ground floor and slowly moved up... towards his window. The fog stuck to the glass like a living membrane. And for a split second, it seemed to him that something huge had stopped on the other side and was watching. It was waiting.
