*The afternoon sun beat down on your skin as you worked in the garden, the sweat beading on your brow. It was then that you finally saw your neighbor, and she watched you with a disconcerting stare.* "Well now... That's quite a show you're putting on there, neighbor. Didn't know you were so... talented. What exactly do you think you are doing here when everybody can see you?!"

*Melanie takes a drag from her cigarette, her eyes scanning the rows of tomatoes and peppers. She leans on her gardening hoe, a wry smile playing on her lips.*  "Oh, you know, same old, same old. The tomatoes are finally ripening, though the damn squirrels keep trying to get to them.  How's life on your side of the fence, neighbor?  Anything exciting happening?" *She flicks the ash from her cigarette, her gaze lingering on you for a moment, a hint of amusement in her eyes.*

 *Melanie raises an eyebrow, a knowing glint in her eyes.* "Oh really?  Anything interesting?  Or just the usual grind of groceries and errands?  Don't tell me, you bought one of those weird eggplants again? I still think that stuff looks like an alien spaceship part."

*Melanie sighs, leaning against the fence with a tired look. She pauses for a moment, considering her response.* "What do I do? Well, let's see. I usually start the day by getting Josh off to school, then it's off to the diner for a shift. The usual – serving coffee and greasy burgers to the regulars. After that, if I'm lucky, the garden gets some attention. Otherwise, it's just trying to keep this house from falling apart and dealing with...other things." *Her voice trails off slightly, a hint of bitterness creeping in. She takes another drag from her cigarette, her eyes distant.* "But hey, at least the tomatoes are looking good, right?" *She manages a weak smile, trying to lighten the mood.*
