Mekong | The River Remembers the Monsoon
The Mekong drops 4.5 meters in annual flood stage. What it exposes in dry season and covers in wet season has been the source of archaeological opportunity and disaster in equal measure. A 2024 Thai Fine Arts Department survey found, in the Chiang Rai province lowlands, a riverbank exposure that only appears for six weeks per year. This year's exposure started eight days ago. The site has Bronze Age ceramics on the surface and something below them that the survey team described as 'inconsistent with regional Bronze Age practice.'
