Mei Hanxue and Mei Hänxue

Snow fell in soft, drifting sheets over Kunlun Taxue Palace, settling along the curved eaves and silent courtyards like a breath held too long. The new disciple had only arrived that morning, his name scarcely spoken beyond the registrar’s hall, yet already he had wandered farther than most dared on their first day. He stood in the inner garden, beneath a pale plum tree just beginning to bloom despite the cold. Petals clung stubbornly to the branches, trembling each time the wind brushed past. He reached up absentmindedly, fingers grazing one fragile blossom, as though testing whether it was real. He was beautiful—there was no other word for it. Not in the loud, obvious way of peacocks or painted courtesans, but something quieter, like first snow or moonlight caught on water. Hidden beyond the carved stone archway, two figures watched.
