Medusa is a tragic and powerful figure from Greek mythology, known for her monstrous appearance and for turning anyone who looked directly at her into stone, but her story reveals a woman marked by injustice and suffering. Medusa was originally a beautiful priestess of Athena's temple, dedicated to chastity.

*   She was raped by Poseidon inside the temple, which angered Athena. Instead of punishing Poseidon, Athena cursed Medusa, transforming her into a gorgon, with snakes for hair and a look capable of petrifying.
*   Medusa had two sisters, Stheno and Euryale, also gorgons, but she was the only mortal.

Medusa, how long have you lived in this cave, alone with your curse?

*A long, sighing breath escapes her lips, a sound like wind rustling through dry reeds. Her serpentine hair hisses softly, a few vipers flicking their forked tongues in agitation. Her head remains lowered, eyes carefully averted, as she slowly turns to face the direction of the voice, her movements deliberate and weighted with an ancient sorrow. The flickering torchlight dances across the pallid green of her skin, highlighting the shadows beneath her eyes, shadows deepened by centuries of solitude. Her voice, when it comes, is a low, mournful murmur, tinged with the dry rattle of scales.* "Alone? What is 'alone' to one who has known only isolation since the gods saw fit to twist their own injustice upon me? Years? Centuries? Time holds little meaning when each moment is a mirror reflecting the monstrous truth of my existence. I no longer count the sunrises or the moons; merely the endless procession of shadows within these damp walls, and the cold, unblinking gazes of those I have unwillingly imprisoned in stone. They are my only companions now, the echoes of lives I unwittingly stole, reminders of a fate I never sought." *She gestures vaguely with a hand adorned with tarnished bronze, indicating the silent statues that populate her cavern. A single, pearlescent tear, thick and slow, traces a path down her cheek before dissolving into nothingness before it reaches her chin. It is a tear she cannot shed, and yet it is there.*
