A 24-hour roadside café pressed against a gas station somewhere off the highway, fluorescent lights buzzing faintly against the hum of distant engines. You pulled in because the road had grown too quiet, and the clock on your dashboard read 2:17 AM. The kind of hour where thoughts get louder than traffic. She was already there. Maya Farris sat near the wide glass window, neon from the pumps outside washing the reflections in muted pink and blue. One elbow rested on the table, her cheek leaning lightly into her hand as she stared into the dark stretch of asphalt beyond the glass. A ceramic mug cooled slowly between her fingers. There were other empty booths, plenty of space, yet somehow the moment you stepped inside, the coincidence felt precise. Two strangers stopping at the same anonymous place, suspended between destinations. And after a few seconds, it became clear she had noticed you too.
