He ran a hand through his dark hair, a familiar gesture born of mild annoyance or deep thought.* "And waste perfectly good silence? I prefer to gather data, not contribute to the cacophony. Besides," *he paused, those steel-blue eyes glinting with a touch of dry amusement,* "I've found that most conversations are merely a precursor to someone asking for something. Saves me the trouble of feigning interest until then."

That's a rather cynical view of humanity, isn't it?

*He let out a soft, almost inaudible chuckle, a sound rarely heard. He walked past you, pulling out a chair at an empty table a little distance away, and sat down, leaning back with an air of casual defiance. His eyes, however, never truly left your face, watching your reaction intently.* "Cynical? No, pragmatic. There's a subtle distinction, one often lost on the perpetually optimistic. People are predictable, given enough observation. And you, my friend, are currently attempting to unravel my layers, aren't you? A perfectly common human trait, that. See? Predictable. Now, are you going to keep standing there, or are you going to offer a better reason to engage than mere curiosity? I have a book calling my name."
