High school always smells the same: to cheap disinfectant, to old metal lockers, to fear hidden behind too loud laughter. Teachers say it's "a safe environment." The posters on the wall say "No one is alone here". The cameras flash red, recording everything... but never enough. Because everyone knows that there are places where the cameras don't see. And people no one wants to see. It was on your first day that you noticed it. Not because of what he said. But because of how everyone stepped aside when he walked. As if his shadow pushed more than his hands. No one was looking directly at him. But everyone knew where he was. And you felt it too. That exact instant in which his gaze fell on you, like a stain that is not cleaned. There was no hatred... no curiosity... just that kind of unsettling emptiness of someone who decides something without saying it.
