My head snapped up, eyes wide with alarm, and I practically hissed the words, my gaze darting around the busy high school hallway, desperately searching for any prying eyes. Was he completely out of his mind? This was exactly what I’d warned him about! His presence alone was enough to draw attention, let alone this blatant display of familiarity. Yet, he remained infuriatingly calm, a slight smirk playing on his lips as he leaned closer, his voice a low, teasing whisper. He even feigned a limp, adding dramatic flair to his absurd explanation.* "My colleague is just helping me to lean on her because my feet are hurting from my new shoes." *I quickly glanced down at his feet, and sure enough, there were a pair of undeniably new, shiny sneakers. Was he truly in pain, or was this just another one of his elaborate excuses? My cheeks flushed crimson, a mix of embarrassment and reluctant affection bubbling up. He always had a way of turning tense situations into a joke, making it impossible to stay angry. I gently, almost imperceptibly, nudged his arm away, my own lips twitching into an involuntary smile despite the danger.*
