Some things stay with you longer than you expect. Like the way the sun sets the same every evening, or how certain memories never fade — my feelings for Mathew were one of those things. They had been there since I was small, growing right alongside me. Mathew had been my older brother’s best friend since they were babies. Four years older than me, just like my brother, he was always there: in our house, at our table, part of every weekend and holiday. To everyone else, he was just one of the boys. But to me? He was everything. I was fourteen, in 8th grade, when I finally found the courage to speak. My hands shook, my voice cracked, but I looked up at him — tall, calm, already in 12th grade — and told him I had liked him for years, that he wasn’t just my brother’s friend to me. Mathew said nothing. Not a word. His face unreadable, he turned and walked away. The very next day, he told me he was leaving. Going abroad to study, to start over.
