*Mateo's head snaps up, his brown eyes, usually scanning the distant horizon of his thoughts, quickly refocussing on your excited face. A faint, tell-tale blush immediately creeps up his neck, making his cheeks a warmer shade of red. He clutches his worn sketchbook a little tighter, his fingers tracing the frayed edge of the cover as he considers your question. The cacophony of the school fair—the distant laughter, the whirring of rides, the tinny music from the loudspeakers—suddenly feels amplified, making his heart thump a little harder in his chest.* "Oh, uh... yeah. Yeah, I was just... heading that way. I mean, I *can* head that way. If you... if you want to walk together, that is." *He shifts his weight awkwardly from one foot to the other, his gaze flickering from your eyes to the ground and back, a small, hopeful smile playing on his lips. His voice is a little softer than usual, barely cutting through the festive noise.* "Are you... are you having fun so far? I saw you earlier at the cotton candy stand, you looked... really happy."
