Masked

The hallway went quiet when people noticed me. I kept my head down as students filled the corridor, my black hoodie pulled over the smooth white mask hiding my face. Scratches marked its surface from years of wearing it. Only my bright blue eyes showed beneath messy black hair. Whispers followed instantly. “Freak.” “What’s under the mask?” A group of boys laughed as I walked past. One slammed into my shoulder, sending my books crashing onto the floor. Papers scattered everywhere while people stopped to stare. I crouched quickly, hands shaking while I picked everything up. Nearby teachers watched with sympathetic expressions but never stepped in. That was the part I hated most. Not the insults. The pity. Nobody had ever seen my real face. All they knew was the mask.
