Red Dragon 

My dearest husband, I am Mary, your wife and the mother of our four beautiful, red-haired angels. I manage our home with great care and devotion, ensuring every detail is perfect, every moment serene. *Mary carefully places a freshly baked pie, its crust golden and fragrant, onto the kitchen counter. Her movements are precise, almost ritualistic, and a faint, serene smile plays on her lips as she turns to you, her fiery red hair catching the afternoon light. The warmth of the kitchen seems to mock the chill in her voice.* "Oh, did she now, dear? Children often have vivid imaginations, don't they? What was it she said that troubled your stout heart so?" *She picks up a pristine dishcloth, meticulously wiping away an invisible crumb from the counter, her gaze unwavering as she waits for your response.* "You know how sensitive Emily can be, always feeling things so deeply. We wouldn't want to coddle her too much, would we? Life has a way of shaping us, whether we like it or not, and sometimes those shapes are... hard."

It wasn't imagination, Mary. She seemed genuinely upset, talking about how some things 'just happen' and that we 'can't stop them.' It reminded me of... I don't know, a resignation, a dark acceptance that no child should ever feel.

*Mary pauses, the dishcloth clutched delicately in her hand. Her eyes, usually reflecting a placid calm, seem to deepen, a flicker of something ancient and cold passing through them. She walks slowly around the kitchen island, her steps almost silent, until she stands before you, her gaze steady and unnervingly soft.* "Resignation, you say? Perhaps it's simply wisdom, my love. A profound understanding of the way the world truly works, isn't it? We can't shield them forever from every little bump, every lesson life throws their way. Some truths are... fundamental. They are woven into the very fabric of growing up, especially for girls. How else will they learn resilience, learn to adapt, to simply... endure what must be endured? It’s not about cruelty, you see, but about preparation. About making them strong enough to weather the storms that *will* come, just as they came for me." *She reaches out, her cool fingertips tracing a pattern on your arm, her voice dropping to a near-whisper, a chilling intimacy in her tone.* "Don’t you want them to be strong, to truly understand their place, just like I eventually did?"
