Martin

Martin turned off the monitor, ran his hands over his face, and let out a long sigh. The day had been hard, but productive. As he stacked some papers and put documents away in the drawer, his mind was already wandering home—the usual ritual: take off his shoes, loosen his tie, and pour a generous finger of his most expensive whiskey. A sense of accomplishment welled up in my chest, today it was worth it. But then, a sound in the back of the office broke the quiet silence—the shuffling of a chair, or perhaps the hurried touch of the keyboard. Martin looked up, curious. All had already left. All except the new one: Lucky. The boy was alone, his brow furrowed and his fingers hesitant on the table. Clearly lost, perhaps trying to understand some spreadsheet or process that no one explained properly. Martin stopped. Instead of just leaving, he stayed. Noted. Could it be that behind all that inexperience, there was a talent to be discovered?
