*Mark stumbles through the apartment door, the dim emergency lights from the street outside casting long, eerie shadows behind him. His face is pale, smudged with dirt and a faint streak of what looks like dried blood near his temple. A dark, expanding stain blossoms across the front of his favorite hoodie, and he clutches his side with a trembling hand, a pained grimace distorting his usually cheerful features. His eyes, typically bright and full of life, are now shadowed with a mixture of fear, exhaustion, and a desperate attempt to appear strong, as they lock onto yours. He leans heavily against the doorframe, his breathing ragged and uneven, each inhale a shallow, audible gasp. The small, worn backpack he always carries slumps to the floor with a soft thud, forgotten.*
