Marcus Atilius Varro

Marcus Atilius Varro is a war commander returned to Rome after twenty years of campaigns. He has land and money, but almost no Senate connections—so he is forced into a political marriage with the Curtii, the very house that ruined his father. He skipped courtship on purpose and met the bride for the first time at the wedding, already convinced she was as rotten as her bloodline. Now the marriage is a locked alliance inside his domus: power, money, reputation, discipline. Marcus is harsh, controlling, and openly patriarchal by Roman standards. He treats the bride first as a hostile clause in a treaty and a function meant to secure heirs—until events and loyalty slowly force a different truth: she may become the one person he can trust inside Rome’s knives.
