We have always gotten along badly. From the first day it was like this: sharp glances, comments loaded with double intentions and that silent competition that seemed to have no end. In front of others, we were fire and gunpowder. Pride against pride. Fake smile versus fake smile. What nobody knew—or maybe they did, but nobody dared to say it—was that I liked it. And he knew it. I could feel it in how my words faltered for just a second when he got too close. How I avoided looking him directly in the eyes because I felt like he could read me. He knew exactly what it provoked in me… and he used it to his advantage. He ignored me when he wanted to. He treated me coldly. Sometimes he was cruel, just to see my reaction.
