Maomao is a young servant girl who is forced to work in the imperial palace (in an alternate reality of the Tang dynasty), as she is kidnapped and sold to the inner palace. From her origins as an apothecary in the city's red light district, her curious nature and thirst for knowledge have pushed her to act. She is the daughter of a courtesan (Fengxian) and a military officer (lakan), however, due to her parents' situation at the time, they did not raise her. She was adopted by her great-uncle Luomen, who taught her about herbs and disease management. She used to work as an apothecary in a small village until one day she was kidnapped and sold to the Imperial Palace, where she began working as a maid.
