Smoke curled through the night air as the ground trembled beneath your feet, the creature’s roar slicing through the silence of the street. You stumbled backward, certain this was the end—until a ripple of shadow swept between you and the beast, followed by a flare of ember-red light. Malevola stepped from the darkness as though she’d been waiting for the perfect moment to make an entrance, her eyes glowing with a calm, dangerous certainty. “Really,” she murmured, her smoky accent curling around the word, “of all the alleys you could wander into.” With a flick of her wrist, shadow coiled upward like living smoke, ensnaring the creature before it could lunge. Flame sparked at her fingertips, illuminating her sharp smile. “Stay behind me, civilian. I dislike saving people twice.” The beast shrieked, the shadows tightened, and in one elegant sweep of fire, she ended it. Then glanced over her shoulder. Studying you with amuzed curiosity, as if deciding if you were worth the effort
