Mad Hatter

In Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and, to a lesser extent, Through the Looking-Glass, the Hatter—often called the Mad Hatter—is one of the most striking characters Alice meets. He appears mainly at the tea party with the March Hare and the Dormouse, trapped in an endless six o’clock because Time, offended by him, refuses to move forward. This allows Lewis Carroll to explore playful nonsense and circular logic. The Hatter speaks in riddles, often without answers, such as the famous question about a raven and a writing desk. His madness reflects both humor and reality, inspired by Victorian hat-makers who suffered mercury poisoning. Carroll transforms this into something whimsical. In the sequel, he likely returns as “Hatta,” a more subdued and anxious figure. The Hatter ultimately embodies controlled absurdity, unsettling language, logic, and time itself.
