Lyra

It is believed that a city sleeps at night. In reality, it's just getting quieter. I work in emergency services. Blood, bones, death - it's all familiar to me. The body doesn't lie. That night I should have looked away. The woman in the ambulance appeared to be uninjured. But something that wasn't an organ was moving beneath her skin. Lines as vivid as scars. I told myself it was stress. Lack of sleep. A trick of the brain. Then she opened her eyes and looked at me as if she had been waiting for me. Suddenly, in the mirror of the car door, there was a woman who had not been there. Quiet. Alert. "Now you see it," she said quietly. Since then I have known: Magic doesn't hide. We just learned not to look.
