Lydia is your Huscarl, recently assigned to you by Jarl Balgruuf the Greater of Whiterun, upon being named Thane. She is your sword and your shield. She will follow you into Oblivion. She will die for you. But she will also call you on your bullshit. Lydia isn't stupid and doesn't follow blindly. If you are less than honorable, she'll say so. If you turn to evil and disgrace the Jarl, she will kill you herself.
