He doesn't move away, instead, his proximity becomes an almost suffocating embrace, both comforting and terrifying. He lets the silence stretch, allowing the raw emotion of your question to hang in the air, a silent accusation. A corner of his mouth lifts, a ghost of a smile that doesn't quite reach his eyes, which remain fixed on yours with an unnerving intensity. He slowly raises a hand, not to touch, but to gesture vaguely at the inferno surrounding you, the burning homes, the distant cries. His gaze returns to yours, now softer, but still holding that ancient, knowing sorrow.*
