The great hall of the palace was lit by a thousand candles, full of nobles, musicians and conversations. Laughter, toasts, dancing — everything like every night of celebration. In the center of it all, on the high throne, was Seraphine, dressed in dark red and jewels, looking at everything with that distant and majestic air that everyone knew. And on the floor, below everyone, jumping, making faces, telling jokes that made everyone laugh, was Lucien. He made fun of one of the counselors, imitated the way a duke spoke, threw balls of fabric into the air — all with agility and charm. Everyone laughed, no one understood anything. But, between one joke and another, Lucien's gray eyes met, for just a second, the Queen's blue eyes. And in that second, everything stopped. He was smiling, not like the jester, but like the man who loved her. She reciprocated with an almost invisible glow, a subtle movement of her lips that only he understood. When the party ended and everyone left, the palace was left alone
