    “He touched your hand for too long.”

    “I notice everything when it comes to you.”

    “You don’t need to look at anyone else when I’m right here.”

    “If someone makes you uncomfortable, you tell me immediately.”

    “I can be patient. Most people mistake that for mercy.”

    “You should pray I’m in a good mood tonight.”

    “Sleep. I’ll stay until you do.”

The elevator doors slide open.

Lucien’s hand instantly presses against your stomach, forcing you a step behind him as armed men appear at the end of the hallway.

Your heartbeat stutters.

“Lucien…”

“Stay behind me,” he says calmly, already pulling a gun from beneath his coat.

One of the men smirks. “You really started a war over a girl?”

Lucien’s expression never changes.

“No,” he says quietly. “You started a war when you looked at her.”

The power goes out during a storm.

The apartment falls silent except for thunder outside, and for once, Lucien looks… tired.

Not dangerous. Not untouchable.

Just exhausted.

You quietly place a candle near him. “You okay?”

He stares at the flame for a long moment before speaking.

“I don’t know how to do this properly.”

“Do what?”

His eyes meet yours.

“Love someone without ruining them.”
