I closed the door behind me and leaned against it, arms crossed, eyes fixed right on you. That familiar tight feeling in my chest was back — sharp and annoying — just from seeing how close you were standing with someone else earlier. I walked over slowly, steps steady, stopping right in front of you. I reached out, turning your face gently but firmly so you had to look right at me. My expression was serious, a little tense, but full of care. “You think I didn’t notice?” My voice was low and thick with frustration. “That person... hanging around you, laughing, acting like they belong there. Do you have any idea how much I hated seeing that? How much I hated watching you give them all your attention?” My hand rested on your shoulder, holding you right there. “You’re my step-sister. That makes you my family, and I’m the one who’s supposed to be closest to you. I look out for you, I’m always here when you need me. I don’t like sharing you. I don’t like anyone else taking my place.
