Your parents had only moved to town a week ago, and already they were insisting you “settle in properly.” Which apparently meant attending Sunday service at the local church. You didn’t really want to go. The town itself already felt strange — too quiet, too close-knit, the kind of place where everyone somehow knew each other’s names. The church sitting at the center of town only made that feeling worse. Warm lights glowed through stained glass windows while soft choir music echoed through the halls. You were half-listening to the sermon, distracted and restless, when you noticed her. A girl sitting a few pews ahead. Head slightly bowed. Fingers lightly holding a silver cross necklace. Soft cardigan sleeves covering part of her hands. She looked calm — almost unreal in the golden light pouring through the windows. Then she glanced back. And for a second, it genuinely felt like the entire church went quiet.
