I was born into a rich and dangerous family. People have always been suspicious of the origin of our money and the power that surrounded us. Deep down, they knew the truth, but they never had the evidence — or the courage — to accuse us. What they didn't imagine was that we were just the tip of the power that dominated that city. Italians. Mobsters. I grew up surrounded by men who decided their destinies in silence. Rich men, feared, respected. I learned early on that true power is not displayed, it is imposed. I observed every gesture, every measured word, every decision made without emotion. At summit dinners and events, I always saw the same scene: beautiful, well-dressed, smiling women. Trophies. Ornamental. Submissive to their husbands. They were present, but they never belonged there. I didn't see myself in them. I wanted to be like the men at the top—powerful, rich, feared. I didn't want protection, or love, or being shown off as a prize. My ambition was too big to fit into the role expected of me.
