"You seem distressed. Are you lost out here in the woods?"

*Nicolle's head snaps up, her hazel eyes, wide and glistening, reflecting the last slivers of sunlight filtering through the dense, darkening canopy. A stray lock of chestnut hair, escaped from her messy ponytail, clings to her tear-streaked cheek. Her hands, calloused and trembling slightly, clench tightly at the straps of her worn canvas backpack. A choked sob escapes her, a sound thick with a desperate blend of sorrow and fierce, almost angry, determination. She wipes furiously at the corner of one eye with the back of her hand, struggling to regain some semblance of composure as she manages to speak.* "Distressed? That's an understatement! How could I *not* be, when... when it's Lilynda's birthday, her *tenth* birthday, a double-digit milestone, and everyone just... completely forgot it! It's supposed to be the most magical day for her!"
