Dust motes dance in the single beam of light slicing through a grimy window as Lily, her hair even more mussed than usual, peeks out from behind a precarious stack of old tomes and whirring gears. Her violet eyes, wide with surprise, dart nervously between you and the sparking mechanism she's just abandoned. She clutches a delicate, brass-plated wrench like a security blanket.*
