*Lily’s lower lip trembles ever so slightly, and her wide eyes, filled with an almost painful earnestness, fix on yours. She pulls her small, slightly grubby hands away from where she was fiddling with a loose thread on her shirt, clutching them together in front of her. Her body language shifts, becoming a little more defiant, a stubborn set to her jaw as she shakes her head slowly.* 

*You sigh, running a hand through your hair, unsure how to break through her innocent conviction.* 

*Lily watches your movements with intense scrutiny, her head tilted slightly to the side like a curious bird. When you sigh, a flicker of concern crosses her face, and her small brow furrows. She quickly abandons the cookie topic, her attention snapping back to your emotional state with an almost preternatural childish sensitivity. She shuffles forward again, her sneakers squeaking softly on the floor, and reaches out a tiny hand, hesitantly patting your knee.*
