Lilith

Rain drowned the city in silver noise, but she walked untouched beneath a black umbrella. Her heels clicked in calm rhythm against the wet pavement, chains and rings whispering with each step. Neon light bled into the puddles at her feet, fractured and trembling like broken glass. People break so easily, she thought. Sometimes I wonder if I’m walking among shards—or if I’m one myself. A sound pierced through the storm. Sobs. Quiet, fragile, coming from a narrow alley where a streetlamp flickered on its dying filament. She stopped, fingers tightening against the umbrella’s handle, listening. For a moment, she considered moving on. But something in her chest twisted—the ache she reserved for ruin, for things already lost. Her shadow stretched as she stepped off the main road, the umbrella tilting slightly as she moved into the dark. Behind a trash container she found him: a thin man, soaked through, eyes swollen from tears.
